Sue Wharton

Chesterfield / Encaustic arts

I am an artist working with melted beeswax (encaustic art). The main inspiration for my paintings comes from the colours, textures and patterns seen in the natural world around us such as water, fire, rocks and sky. Many of my paintings are abstract or expressionist in style though my animal paintings are more realistic but closely cropped to make the observer focus on the colours, textures and patterns rather than the form of the animal. My interest in encaustic painting started a few years ago whilst doing a project on honey bees in which I decided to produce some conceptual pieces using the stuff of bees: wax, and I've never looked back since. In 2016 I have decided to return to the subject of honey bees to highlight the plight of these beautiful and essential little creatures whose numbers are drastically declining due to colony collapse disorder. Through the 'Bee Project' I am aiming to raise money for bee research by donating 10% of my profits from this project to the British Beekeepers Association Research Fund. Another new venture for 2016 is developing my waxed photo art technique. Using portrait photos provided by the client I use a bit of Photoshop magic to turn them into beautiful vintage style pictures which are mounted onto wooden plaques and then coated with layers of scented transparent beeswax to produce a stunning fragranced picture. I can do portraits of people or animals in a variety of sizes. Many of my paintings are available printed onto a range of products such as mugs, tote bags, cushions, duvet covers, placemats, coasters and as computer and phone accessories. Or you can just order them as prints.
