More Care Design Collective

More Care Design Collective was formed in Buxton in 2013 by Sarah Brindley after returning from a year long residency based in a furniture workshop in Seville, Spain. Sarah is a designer/maker based in Buxton. With the support of the Trisha Ashcroft of Moore Care, Buxton it was decided that each member would benefit from 1-to-1 learning sessions. Moore care provides supported living for people requiring personal care living in Buxton. The 9 adults that comprise MCDC all work individually with Sarah Brindley . All of the MCDC members have learning difficulties, but all of the MCDC members demonstrate a great capacity for creativity and willingness to learn new skills in art & design and working hands-on with a variety of materials with a variety of tools in a real workshop setting. Most of the members of MCDC learn about design and making "on the job", this is particularly so for fabricating furniture . Each member of MCDC brings their own interests and skills which are directed and channeled to form their own individual projects. Consequently this means that some pieces of furniture have taken up to 2 years to produce which demonstrates the commitment to learning and making by the MCDC members. As a result of the enthusiasm for making and the quality of the work produced the individuals of MCDC held their first exhibition in July 2015 at the Ladmanlow workshop where they based. Later that month they participated in the Buxton Art Trail which was part of the 2015 Buxton Festival Fringe. Sarah Brindley & MCDC won the Community Artist Award in the Visual Arts category. Something we are all still shocked about as we had only been producing work as a group since the end of 2013. Some MCDC members have had commissions which have been used as experiences of working with a client and producing quality work. Some of the work is of such a standard and has been hand-made over several years that we feel needs to be seen by a wider audience for it to receive the acknowledgment it deserves.
