Sue Blatherwick

Buxton / Ceramics

After a period of researching and writing about ceramics and my family history I have returned to making. My work follows in the tradition of slip decorated earthenware yet incorporates aspects of my previous fine art practice. The subjects I am interested are family (past and present), the significance of 'home' and what this means (to me and others), the beauty of nature and an ecological concern for the environment. These subjects are reflected in obvious and obscure ways, directly an indirectly, in abstract and representational imagery, and in the making of items for the domestic environment. I use marks in a painterly manner which suggests a positive energy. Slip is trailed, splashed and painted, sometimes using Japanese brushes. I make a range of dishes, bowls and other functional items as well as hand made tiles and house signs. My bespoke tiles have been utilised in a number of kitchens and are frequently mixed with commercially produced plain ones, creating an individually designed environment. Ceramic house signs or numbers help to identify your property with the use of bold and clear hand cut numbers or letters.
